Breakthrough Article

By Dean Ferrara:

So, a New Year is upon us and hopefully it finds us all having personally enjoyed the holiday season. Hopefully it also finds you enjoying a nice back log of work to take with you into the coming months.

A few of the contractors I have been talking with have told me that the start of the New Year is looking very promising to. After last year, I think we all could use a breather in 2003. One question I like to ask anyone I am talking to about their business is this; what are you going to be doing differently this year to become better? After all, you don’t have to be sick to get better. Make sense?

If you have ever made a New Years resolution you know that what starts out as a good idea, usually ends as just that, a good idea. Now don’t get me wrong, not everyone abandons their resolutions, some people actually go on to succeed in making those changes. Unfortunately, that is more the exception than the rule. If you will allow me to use a cliché, most people don’t plan to fail, they simply fail to plan. Saying you are going to do something and actually doing it are two completely different things.

My definition of insanity is - doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. I really like that as it describes the majority of us and it makes me laugh. We all want to change for the better but we don’t always do it. When the New Year rings in, millions of people from around the world celebrate, while many of us recognize that with the changing of the calendar, also comes the changing of our businesses.

For most of us sales accounts go back to zero and we have to start all over again. Finance gets to deal with year end, we all get to deal with inventory, performance reviews, pay raises, etc. etc. Our customers go through similar changes and it forces them to focus on evaluating us. Even our vendors impact us as the New Year often brings a price increase. With all this going on with just the flip of a calendar page, no wonder we have a hard time getting new ideas, thoughts or plans moving in the right direction. At ePerformance Learning we have built our foundation by providing our members with bite size pieces of information that will help them to make the changes they need, or to provide them with thoughts or processes on how they may be able to do something better. After all, we all want to get better but sometimes when you add everything up, it seems overwhelming. So I ask you, how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time, right? And that is exactly how to handle making positive improvements to your business, one bite at a time.

As a New Years gift to you, we would like to help you take that first step in becoming even better by providing you with one of our many exercises designed to help you make changes for the better. Please use it to make sure that your changes are well thought out and your plan is in place before you move forward. If you like it, let us know. We have a lot more where that came from. Feel free to browse through our learning center and see all the great exercises, content and benefits available to our members. Also check out our advisor page and meet some of our advisors. These are people who have been there and done that. And as is always the case, if you would like to find out more, simply contact us via our web site. We hope you have a great year in 2003.
